    • SUMMARY
Eliza was born in the winter of 1817 in Vauxhall in London, to William Fisher a Solicitor and mother Elizabeth King. We don't yet know anything about her early years or if she had siblings.

Eliza gets married in the summer of 1841, aged 24 in Highgate in north London to James Beaumont, aged 32. James is a solicitor, and a wealthy one it seems since they live in a rich area of Highgate. Eliza gives birth to 9 children, of whom Macdonald is the significant one to continue this family tree.

Her son Macdonald wrote a brief family history for one of his sons, which gives us an insight into the character of Eliza. "Till I was about seven years old we lived at Highgate. I can just remember the jolly old house and garden, afterwards taken by the late Lord Justice Fry. Highgate was then a very conservative, narrow-minded place, where trade was despised, and no-one was reckoned 'in society' unless in some recognised profession. When we moved to Blackheath (before Arundel House) your grandmother was surprised at being taken into dinner by a stockbroker! However he became a great friend, James Nairn Scott. Her views expanded, she became very tolerant and broad-minded, and most sympathetic, but she disliked common people." From which we can gather she was a social snob and had obviously lived in comfortable circumstances all her life.

The 1861 Census has the family living at the Grove, a wealthy address in Highgate, and 4 servants live with them. In 1871 they have moved to south London at No1. Blessington st. in the parish of Lee, Lewisham. This is the address that her mother Elizabeth died at in 1867, so the family must have inherited it.

In the spring of 1880 James dies, aged 71. His Probate record shows that he left a Personal Estate of around £50,000, which equates to £3.3 million in 2017 money according to the National Archives calculator.
Eliza continues living at their home, No.1 Blessington st in Lee for the rest of hie life. in the 1891 census, she's there with 2 daughters and 3 domestic servants. In 1901 she is there with 3 daughters and 3 domestic servants.

Eliza dies aged 91 in 1908. Her Probate shows she leaves effects of £18,282, which the National Archives Currency converter says is equal to £1.4 million in 2017 money.

From family notes of Mcdonald Beaumont 1934 written to his son Kenneth:

"...Your great-grandmother, a Miss King, married Fisher at the early age of 16, a jolly-looking girl, I fancy. They both lived in Yorkshire for a time, near the Moors and to the authress of 'Jane Eyre', who was so isolated that your grand-mother (Eliza Charlotte) could not conceive how she acquired her knowledge of the world.

Strictly we are entitled to hyphen Fisher to Beaumont, as your grandmother was the last of her race, but we have never done it, and Fisher is not a pretty name. She did have one brother who went the pace and whose death was very sudden indeed, so we did not discuss him much...

...Till I was about seven years old we lived at Highgate. Her views expanded, she became very tolerant and broad-minded, and most sympathetic, but she disliked common people. She died at 92.

Why did the family live in Yorkshire for a time?

When Eliza died her probate shows she left £19,282 which is the equivalent of £1.4 million in 2017 money according to the National Archive currency calculator. So she died a wealthy woman.
