Notes |
- Jane was a crofters wife in the north east Highlands of Scotland. Her life would have been hard, living in a small one room blackhouse and helping her husband on the land tending the crops and animals.
+++++
Her son's records which mention her:
Birth record 1823:
Tain 4th Sept 1823. By which date George Ross at Fendum [Fendom is an area about 2 miles from Tain], had by his wife Jane Murray a son born to him lawfully begot and was baptised on the 7th day before the congregation named John.
1857 Marriage record, Parish of Rogart:
On 26th June, 1857, John Ross from Tain, aged 33, a House Carpenter, and Helen Mackay from Muir(?) Rogart, aged 29, a Dressmaker, were married.
John's parents are recorded as George Ross, Tenant (deceased) and Jane Ross, maiden name Murray.
Helen's parents are recorded as William MacKay, Merchant, and Christy MacKay, maiden name MacLeod.
+++++++
record of Death 1843, Dornoch:
13th Feb, Jane Murray, Relict of John Ross - 'at the foot of Lydenhall wood [Lydeshall wood]'
no age or cause of death recorded.
Is this correct? She isn't mentioned as deceased in son's marriage record, and why record her death under her maiden name?
