      His father was a farmer, and William was the eldest of 6 sons and 2 daughters, and lived in Upper Drumin near Inveravon in Banffshire. His brother George is famous for being the founder of the Glenlivet whisky distillery. William married Christina Grant who was the daughter of a local farmer.
