No. 2 Greestone / Grecian Place was owned by the Cathedral, and you can see how it would have dominated the view every time Susanna walked out of her front door.

Susannah lived at No.2 and No.4 but no photo found of them, even though they're also Grade II listed Georgian buildings

  • Notes
    • Susanna was born in Hertfordshire, we don't know anything about her parents apart from their names.
She married Francis, a young priest from a wealthy family probably shortly before 1787 - when her eldest child Francis was born.
The polling records of her husband show him living in Lincoln from 1790, despite holding a number of vicar positions in other Lincolnshire parishes, so she probably spent almost the entirety of her married life within the clergy circles of Lincoln Cathedral.
She lived to a ripe old age of 95.

      1851 census record
Susanna M Swan, widow aged 92, is living at No,4 Grecian Place, Lincoln.
She is widow of the Rev Francis Swan
She was born in Barley, Hertfordshire

*Grecian Place, as listed in the census is actually a scrambled version of the real name, which is Greestone Place.
"In fact Greestone is a mutilation too. It was Greeson Place, Greeson being the plural of 'gree' meaning step."

Greeston stairs are said to be one of the most haunted places in Lincoln. a nun with a baby, a cleric hanging from a lamppost and the rolling head of a saint are some of the ghosts said to haunt this lane.
