  • Notes
    • Frances was a country girl from rural Suffolk, the daughter of a Mill wright (carpenter for mills), who started her working life as a servant for a Suffolk farmer along with her brother who worked for the farm as an agricultural labourer.
      At some point in her teenage years she must have decided to move to the city in search of a different life, because by the age of 19 she gets married to an East End Tailor.
      She then remains in East London for the rest of her life, raising 7 children.

      +++++++

      Where was Frances born?
      In official records she goves her birthplace as variously:
      - Sudbury, Suffolk
      - Ballingdon-cum-Brundon, Essex
      - Wallingford, Essex
      HOWEVER it turns out Ballingdon is a parish in the district of Sudbury, in Suffolk.

      Christening record, Bedfield, Suffolk says she was born 13th Oct 1828 and Christened 22nd June 1828. Father James Read, mother Charlotte Brighton.

      Dates on this are wrong, she can't be born after she was christened. Throughout her life she gives an age in official records which shows she was born in 1826. Original record not seen for this, assume computer translated date wrong, and she was born 13th Oct 1826 and Christened 22nd June 1828.
