    • SUMMARY
Emma Jane Sheppard was born in Stepney, East London in 1854 to Frederick Sheppard an East End Tailor and Frances Pead from Suffolk. Emma Jane was in the middle, age-wise, of a family of 7 siblings. They would have grown up in a busy household in a busy area of London where lots of small industry was based.

In 1861 when she was aged 7 she is described as a scholar, and the the family lived at No.5 Philpot st in Mile End. It should be noted that the compulsory education act of parliament for England only came into force in 1880, so Emma's parents believed it was important enough to spend money on sending their children to school. In 1871 Emma is 17, and the family have moved a couple of doors to No.9 Philpot st. Emma is not a scholar and is not given an occupation in this census. Neither of their victorian homes on this street still exist, new buildings having replaced them.

In 1880, aged 27, Emma marries William Hampton, a merchant seaman aged 31 in Stepney, East London. William, who had started his working life as a groom aged 10 in Hampshire, had spent the previous decade going up the seaman ranks from ships steward, and had qualified as a Master Mariner in 1879, the year before his marriage. This meant he was a Captain of merchant ships, since the merchant navy use Master instead of Captain. When the marriage Banns were read out, they were both living at No. 61 Nelson St in Whitechapel, which is round the corner from Philpot street. Perhaps they met while both lodgers there.

In 1881, the following year, they're both living at 511 Commercial rd, Tower Hamlets, Mile End, London. He's aged 31 and he's a 'Mariner Merchant Service'. Emma J Hampton is his wife aged 27. Their daughter Marguerite Louise is also born in 1881. She was the first of 3 children, and is the significant one to continue this family tree.

Between 1879 and 1883 William commands ships that travel from Britain to India, because in 1883 he is described as "W W Hampton, late of the British-India Steam Navigation Company, in which service he has been long and favourably known as having had large experience in their first-class passanger ships trading between England and India". He also is recorded on a voyage to Australia in 1883, and subsequently worked for the Queensland Steamship Company. By the late 1880s he's recorded more often in Australian waters, and it's during this time that Emma and their first born move to live in Sydney, because their second child is born there in 1886, followed by a third in 1890.
This would have been quite a change for the family, since Sydney was a bit of a boom town in the late 19th century.

Then suddenly William dies in India on 23rd of January 1893, aged 43.
The UK Register of Deceased Seamen records that William died of 'malarial fever and delirium' while Master on the SS Waroonga on the Hooghly River in India. His Probate says he was living at 83 Victoria St, Sydney at the time.
He left his widow £300, which is the equivalent of £24,000 in 2017 money (National Archives calculator). His daughter Marguerite was aged 12 when he died, his youngest child aged 3.

Emma Jane lives on for another 13 years in Sydney. It must have been a tough time for the family. We don't know if she took on a job, or whether she took in boarders to help with the finances.
In the 1895 Sydney street index she is recorded as living at "Lexden Villa", Illawara rd, Marrickville, New South Wales, and she's still there in 1900 and 1905.
In the 1905 record her immediate neighbours are a butcher, a grocer, a tinsmith and an accountant, so a neighbourhood of tradespeople. In the 1901 Census she's recorded as head of the household with 4 females in it, their names are not recorded but we should assume it was her 3 daughters. In 1904 her eldest daughter Marguerite got married in Marrickville, so confirming they were still living there. She married a wealthy farmer.

Emma Jane died on the 30th of July 1906 aged 52.
Her cause of death is not known.
She was buried on the 1st of August in the Waverly Cemetery, St Clement parish, Marrickville, Sydney.
The inscription on her headstone simply said 'Mother'.
