| Churchstanton parish church where Keziah got married
|
| 28th Feb 1765 marriage record for John Sumerhayes and Keziah Cleake, at Churchstanton, Somerset Keziah is described as a 'minor...married with consent of parents'
John signed the register, but Keziah made an X as her signature so she couldn't write |

| 17th Jan 1808 Burial record for Keziah Summerhays, age 64 at Churchstanton If this is the correct Keziah Summerhays then the age at death means she was born c. 1744.
The problem with that is it means she would have been aged 21 when she got married in 1765, so why would she be described as a 'minor' on her marriage record?
It could be her age at death was estimated... |
| 1781 Parish record from Churchstanton that confusingly has the burial of a 'Keziah Summerhayes' on 8th July 1781, and the baptism of 'Keziah daughter of John and Keziah Sumerhays Oct 9th 1781' on one page Initially you think could be a baptism and death of a baby, but the dates are the wrong way round... |

Notes |
- A Summerhayes family history says Keziah was the daughter of A Cleake, a clockmaker* who married John Somerhays, and went on to have 10 children over a 22 year period. 2 children died in childhood and more than one went to America.
(*This is wrong, her father wasn't Adam Cleake the clockmaker, he was William Cleake)

1st Dec 1745 birth record for 'Kezia Daughter of William and Temperance Clake', in Otterford
In 1764 When the Banns of marriage were read out in church in Churchstanton in Devon / Somerset she was described as 'of this parish'. (see image above)
She married John Somerhayes 28th Feb 1765 in Churchstanton, when he was aged 23, and she is described as a 'minor...married with consent of parents'.
She signs her name as a X in the register, meaning she couldn't write.
(see image above)
Describing her as 'minor' might seem confusing since she was aged 20. However, The Marriage Act of 1753 made it illegal for those in England under the age of 21 to get married without the consent of their parents or guardians. This lasted until 1823 when this was repealed and the legal ages for marriage reverted to 14 for boys and 12 for girls (which had been the law starting in 1660)
