It is interesting to note that Fanny Hodds, who is a general servant aged 66 in this census, was first recorded as working for the family in the 1861 census when she was 37 years old. So she remained with the family, and presumably was treated as part of the family for at least half her life. She remained unmarried all her life. |

- SUMMARY
Maria was born in 1828, the 4th child of a wealthy vicar in Lincolnshire, Francis Swan (jnr) and his wife Susanna Linton who was also from a wealthy Lincolnshire family.
Not much is known about her life except through who she married.
In 1855, aged 27, she married Rev George Blenkin, who was the Vicar of St Botolph's church in Boston, Lincolnshire. He had just finished a big restoration of this famous church, and remained it's vicar until he died in 1892. This meant Maria would have lived in the heart of established society in this Lincolnshire town, and their 4 children would have grown up in comfortable circumstances. They lived in the 'church yard' which must mean the vicarage according to census records, and had 4 domestic servants which they could obviously afford.
When her husband died in 1892, Maria moved in the following years to Amberley, a small village in the Stroud valleys in Gloucestershire, where her daughter Emily was married to the local clergyman, Henry Summerhayes.
She died in 1909 at Amberley, and left £4985 in her Will (equivalent to £389,000 according the National Archives calculator), no doubt from the residual wealth of her own family rather than her husband's.
